Type R

People with DietQ Type R often start with an earnest attempt to lose weight in a healthy way. In fact, they may omit whole food groups or “unhealthy” food. However, as they reach their goal weight, they may feel that it is not enough and that they need to lose more or restrict more types of food. Individuals with DietQ Type R may feel compelled to restrict food or exercise excessively to lose weight. Over time, other people may tell them that they are too thin—but, when they look in the mirror, they still see themselves as “too fat.” They really do see themselves fat. The brain makes them see something that other people do not see. This can turn into an eating disorder called Anorexia Nervosa.

For some DietQ Type R individuals, gaining weight becomes a strong, pervasive fear that affects every aspect of their lives. As this fear grows, they can become so obsessed with calories that they develop a full-fledged eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa. For some DietQ Type R individuals, an inherent fear of judgment and a need to please others lead to a distorted belief that if they achieve what they believe is the ideal body, they will get more approval from others, be more successful, and happier overall. Constant comparisons against others reinforce this belief and strengthen the obsession.

The distorted thought process of DietQ Type R can be especially difficult for individuals dealing with mental health issues like anxiety, OCD, or depression. Successfully overcoming these thoughts and learning to manage one’s weight in a healthy manner will mean addressing any underlying mental health concerns in addition to eating behaviors.

Constant calorie obsession, over-exercising, and under-eating can take a serious (and sometimes dangerous) toll over time. At a minimum, worrying nonstop about one’s weight is mentally and emotionally exhausting. For some, the cycle of negative thoughts and feelings of failure can lead to new or worsening symptoms of depression, anxiety, and/or Anorexia.

On a physical level, the repercussions of losing too much weight, exercising too often, or dramatically reducing one’s net calories can be incredibly dangerous. Many Type R individuals run the risk of malnutrition, repetitive motion injuries, cardiovascular damage, and other serious health problems. At its most extreme, DietQ Type R can develop into a severe eating disorder like Anorexia or Bulimia.
